TERMS AND CONDITIONS GOVERNING THE PROVISION OF GRAPHIC AND TEXT OBJECTS TO MAGPIEBOOKS® AND PAMMS GUIDES®
- Our Software
We manufacture our printing plates using high technology CTP (Computer To Plate). To ensure the best possible results, digital art must meet the standards described in this document.
- We accept
Press Quality PDFs generated by Adobe Acrobat Distiller or generated directly by Quark, InDesign, Illustrator or Photoshop. All PDFs must be written to an Adobe press standard and no other.
Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign digital art, including all versions from the Adobe Creative Suite must be flattened before creating the PDF.
- If you are generating PDFs through InDesign, Illustrator or Photoshop please flatten any transparent areas within the files before distilling the postscript. For a complete reference and troubleshooting guide on how transparency affects output please refer to Transparency in Adobe applications: A print production guide (PDF: 5.1M) at www.adobe.com/studio/print/psp.html. Adobe publish further guides under the headings of Print Resources, PDF & Printing and Colour & Transparency.
- Magpie Books does not accept output from the following software applications: Access, CorelDraw, Excel, Freehand, Pagemaker, Powerpoint, Publisher or Word.
- Outside Covers
If you provide digital art for an outside cover, you can allow for one Magpie Books approved PMS colour to the CMYK space and PDF art for creating a UV gloss plate.
- Proofs
Proofing practice has changed substantially with the advent of Computer To Plate. Subject to acceptance by Magpie Books the decision on what proofs to supply, if any, rests entirely with the client.
Any and all instructions to print or proof or further instructions must always be in writing. Please do not rely on e-mail for these instructions.
- Page make up and imposition will be constructed and completed from graphic objects and type where provided by client or otherwise by publisher. All digital art must be set and proofed to the correct size. Where proofs are supplied, they must be agreed to and signed off by Magpie Books.
- For page imposition, we request a content proof, but it is not a prequisite.
The Graphic Arts Services Association of Australia (GASSA) report from their 2004 Survey: “Significantly 14% of those surveyed said they rarely (less than 10% of the times) use physical contract proofs, and 11% said they never supply or receive hard copy proofs in commissioning print work” and that “a quarter of all respondents never or rarely use hard copy (contract) proofs to print from”.
- Fonts
All fonts must be embedded within the PDF file. If type is used in Illustrator, or cannot be embedded, the text should be converted to Outlines.
For the best printed results, classical reading text should not be typeset in Photoshop. Set type in Photoshop for headline and artistic effect only.
We will accept Type 1, True Type and Open type fonts.
Type size must not fall below 8 points for colors such as black on white or 10 points for reversals.
- Colour
All colour is to be CMYK. Never supply RGB, LAB or an alternate color space for CTP.
Special and spot colours (e.g.; Pantones) can be handled by prior arrangement and additional cost. If spot color is supplied in a CMYK color space, our software will convert the spot to process.
When saving files in the Photoshop EPS format do not include a halftone screen, transfer function or embeded colour profiles.
- Objects to be printed in black should be made up using process black. Do not create your own black from the three process colours.
The maximum total ink weight of the file in any area should not exceed 310% with a 90% black maximum, should use UCR (Under Color Removal) and allow for a 14 - 18% dot gain.
- Resolution
Four-colour CMYK - 300 dpi at 100% print size.
Format - Best as PDF, but in lieu EPS or Tiff.
Black & White Line Art - 1200 dpi at 100% print size.
- Cropping
Please ensure that all images are properly cropped and scaled to the final advertisement size. Make sure you include
EXACTLY or AT LEAST 5mm bleed all round.
- All copy including text, images, keylines, key numbers and borders must be kept 5mm from the trim line.
Avoid running type across the gutter. If you need to run type across a gutter please allow a minimum of 3mm clearance on both sides of the gutter, as we Perfect Bind these publications.

All CDs & DVDs must be clearly marked and should be accompanied by material instructions including details of the original applications.
